Abstract: Osteoarthritis of the knee joint is a consequence of its chronic inflammation, which causes degenerative changes in tissues. The reasons for this phenomenon are numerous and varied, but they all give the same effect - an inflammatory process that affects cartilage, ligaments, meniscus, etc. This article highlights the socio-epidemiological features of osteoarthritis of the knee joint. The social significance of osteoarthritis of the knee joint is determined by growth relating to disability, especially in older age groups, and there is a sharp decline in quality of life with this disease. Disability in elderly patients with osteoarthritis of the knee joint is comparable to these people who suffer from cardiovascular diseases in this patient population. The effective treatment of osteoarthritis acquires a huge social and economic importance.
