Advancing Bioenergy Sustainability: Integrating Sustainability Assessment Tools and Frameworks for Bioenergy and Bioproduct Systems

The urgent global issues, such as increasing temperatures and changing climates, the Russia-Ukraine conflict, and the COVID-19 epidemic, all highlight the need to shift from fossil fuel-based infrastructures to bioenergy and bioproducts to achieve our sustainable growth goals. A comprehensive analysis and design should be conducted to ensure the long-term viability of the many components within these systems. Utilizing advanced sustainability techniques is crucial for achieving this significant goal. This study thoroughly evaluates several analytical methods, such as techno-economic, life cycle assessment, energy, power, and exergy studies, specifically about bioenergy and bioproduct systems. The underlying concepts of these methodologies are succinctly elucidated, followed by a delineation of their advantages and disadvantages in constructing, assessing, and improving bioenergy and bioproduct networks. While these tools offer potential benefits, they could be flawless solutions for addressing all the complexities of implementing bioenergy and bioproduct structures. Integrating these tools can yield more dependable and precise outcomes than individual methods.
