Incorporating Simulations into Teaching in Higher Education and Its Advantages

Teaching in higher education is significantly different from teaching in other educational institutions. In contemporary teaching and learning, a variety of activities and teaching methods are being applied effectively in order to reach deeper learning in a higher education setting. However, the practice of incorporating simulations or instructional scenarios where a student is set in a "world" characterized by a teacher to represent reality is limited. It is not often used in teaching due to its overshadowed values and practicality. This article reveals the benefits and practical importance of using simulations in teaching based on some experience gained at a university with foundation year students and provides some effective tips and recommendations on using the method productively.
