Recent measurements of charm-baryon production in hadronic collisions have questioned the universality of charm-quark fragmentation across different collision systems. In this work the fragmentation of charm quarks into charm baryons is probed, by presenting the first measurement of the longitudinal jet momentum fraction carried by <a:math xmlns:a="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><a:mrow><a:msubsup><a:mrow><a:mi mathvariant="normal">Λ</a:mi></a:mrow><a:mrow><a:mi>c</a:mi></a:mrow><a:mrow><a:mo>+</a:mo></a:mrow></a:msubsup></a:mrow></a:math> baryons, <d:math xmlns:d="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><d:mrow><d:msubsup><d:mrow><d:mi>z</d:mi></d:mrow><d:mrow><d:mo stretchy="false">∥</d:mo></d:mrow><d:mrow><d:mi>ch</d:mi></d:mrow></d:msubsup></d:mrow></d:math>, in hadronic collisions. The results are obtained in proton-proton (<g:math xmlns:g="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><g:mi>p</g:mi><g:mi>p</g:mi></g:math>) collisions at <i:math xmlns:i="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><i:msqrt><i:mi>s</i:mi></i:msqrt><i:mo>=</i:mo><i:mn>13</i:mn><i:mtext> </i:mtext><i:mtext> </i:mtext><i:mi>TeV</i:mi></i:math> at the LHC, with <k:math xmlns:k="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><k:mrow><k:msubsup><k:mrow><k:mi mathvariant="normal">Λ</k:mi></k:mrow><k:mrow><k:mi>c</k:mi></k:mrow><k:mrow><k:mo>+</k:mo></k:mrow></k:msubsup></k:mrow></k:math> baryons and charged (track-based) jets reconstructed in the transverse momentum intervals of <n:math xmlns:n="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><n:mrow><n:mn>3</n:mn><n:mo>≤</n:mo><n:msubsup><n:mrow><n:mi>p</n:mi></n:mrow><n:mrow><n:mi>T</n:mi></n:mrow><n:mrow><n:msubsup><n:mrow><n:mi mathvariant="normal">Λ</n:mi></n:mrow><n:mrow><n:mi>c</n:mi></n:mrow><n:mrow><n:mo>+</n:mo></n:mrow></n:msubsup></n:mrow></n:msubsup><n:mo><</n:mo><n:mn>15</n:mn><n:mtext> </n:mtext><n:mtext> </n:mtext><n:mi>GeV</n:mi><n:mo>/</n:mo><n:mi>c</n:mi></n:mrow></n:math> and <q:math xmlns:q="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><q:mrow><q:mn>7</q:mn><q:mo>≤</q:mo><q:msubsup><q:mrow><q:mi>p</q:mi></q:mrow><q:mrow><q:mi>T</q:mi></q:mrow><q:mrow><q:mtext>jet ch</q:mtext></q:mrow></q:msubsup><q:mo><</q:mo><q:mn>15</q:mn><q:mtext> </q:mtext><q:mtext> </q:mtext><q:mi>GeV</q:mi><q:mo>/</q:mo><q:mi>c</q:mi></q:mrow></q:math>, respectively. The <s:math xmlns:s="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><s:msubsup><s:mi>z</s:mi><s:mo stretchy="false">∥</s:mo><s:mi>ch</s:mi></s:msubsup></s:math> distribution is compared to a measurement of <v:math xmlns:v="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><v:msup><v:mi mathvariant="normal">D</v:mi><v:mn>0</v:mn></v:msup></v:math>-tagged charged jets in <y:math xmlns:y="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><y:mi>p</y:mi><y:mi>p</y:mi></y:math> collisions as well as to 8 simulations. The data hints that the fragmentation of charm quarks into charm baryons is softer with respect to charm mesons, in the measured kinematic interval, as predicted by hadronization models which include color correlations beyond leading-color in the string formation. © 2024 CERN, for the ALICE Collaboration 2024 CERN
