80/20 Principle in Phonetics, Lexis and Word Formation

Universal principles apply to many fields of study. For instance, the paradigm principle has been transferred from the natural sciences to the social sciences, particularly linguistics and philosophy. The Pareto principle may also be applied to the theory of linguistics from practical fields like economics, marketing, and management. The Pareto principle states that 20% of an effort yields 80% of the output, and 20% of an effort is efficient for 80% result. The principle may be used to clarify quantitative and qualitative indications within language elements at various layers such as phonetics, lexicon, morphology, and syntax. The article examines how the Pareto principle is reflected in the Uzbek language's sound system. It also proves that 80/20 principle may be used to lexis classification and word formation studies. The observations in lexis and word formation were carried out using the Uzbek educational corpus and Uzbek language’s definition dictionary. It has been demonstrated that the percentage of obsolete (archaic) words and neologisms in the sources may be classed as 80/20.
