HYBRID MODELS FOR PROCESSING POLYSEMOUS WORDS

This thesis elucidates the models and psycholinguistic foundations related to the manifestation of processing polysemous words in the mental lexicon, including their reception, understanding, and comprehension - in a word, their processing. The significance of polysemy in natural language systems and the cognitive mechanisms involved in understanding such lexical phenomena are analyzed. Selective, parallel, ordered, SEL, GL, and pragmatic model approaches are explained through examples, and the emergence of hybrid models based on the limitations of these models is discussed. The processing of lexical polysemy in mental lexicon activity and the influence of frequency and context factors are explained based on experimental psycholinguistic data. The analysis substantiates that hybrid models are the most effective approach to understanding polysemous words.
