THE PLACE OF THE WOMAN'S PORTRAIT IN THE WORKS "MIDDLEMARCH" AND "ANNA KARENINA"

This article analyzes the artistic and philosophical significance of the female image in the works of the English writer George Eliot and the Russian author Leo Tolstoy. The study examines the authors’ individual approaches to creating female characters, as well as their spiritual, moral, and social roles in society from a comparative perspective. In Eliot’s novels Middlemarch and The Mill on the Floss, female protagonists are portrayed as symbols of intellectual freedom and personal independence, whereas in Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina and War and Peace, women stand at the center of the conflict between human passion, conscience, and morality. The article demonstrates that female characters reflect not only individual emotional experiences but also the ideas of humanism, purity, and spiritual awakening that form the foundation of both writers’ worldviews.
