Аннотация

Isaac Asimov’s “The Currents of Space” (1952), while ostensibly a space opera within his Galactic Empire series, subtly mirrors real-world social hierarchies, particularly those associated with race and class. Set in a far-future interstellar society, the novel explores themes of systemic oppression, forced labor, cultural supremacy, and resistance — paralleling the racial tensions and civil rights struggles of mid-20th-century America. This article argues that Asimov, knowingly or not, encoded in the socio-political structure of the novel a metaphorical reflection of racial injustice and segregation. Drawing on historical analysis of the American Civil Rights Movement, alongside literary and sociological criticism, the study demonstrates how the planetary dynamics between Florina and Sark evoke plantation-era slavery and colonial subjugation. Through the character of Rik and the broader motif of “forgotten identity,” Asimov explores alienation and cultural erasure. Ultimately, “The Currents of Space” anticipates a broader discourse on race, identity, and liberation that would become central in both literature and society in the decades to follow.
