Policy Brief: Fragmentation-Aware QRA for Open-Pit Mines

Аннотация

In the high-stakes environment of open-pit mining, Quantitative Rockfall Risk Assessment (QRA) must provide a rigorous, mathematical basis for evaluating the probability and consequences of rock detachment and propagation. Traditional geotechnical practice, which often relies on a single "design scenario" or a "worst-case block," is increasingly recognised as insufficient for modern safety standards. Such deterministic approaches fail to account for the inherent stochasticity of rock masses.A robust QRA must instead adopt the "double integral formulation," treating risk as the weighted sum of all admissible events, together with the consequences. In this Policy Bried strategic actions to assess and manage the complex hazards of open-pit slopesare provided.
