This study presents a thermodynamic and kinetic analysis of the oxidative selective leaching of sphalerite (ZnS), the principal mineral component of sulfide zinc concentrate produced at JSC Almalyk Mining and Metallurgical Complex, using pyrolusite (MnO₂) in an acidic medium. The reaction mechanism was evaluated based on the relationship between Gibbs free energy change (ΔG°) and the equilibrium constant (K). The dynamic variations of thermodynamic parameters were calculated within the temperature range of 298–418 K. The results demonstrated that the reaction ZnS + MnO₂ + 4H⁺ → Zn²⁺ + Mn²⁺ + S + 2H₂O is thermodynamically favorable over the investigated temperature range, with the highest feasibility observed at 45–55 °C. The obtained thermodynamic and kinetic data provide a scientific basis for the development of energy-efficient and environmentally sustainable hydrometallurgical technologies for processing sulfide zinc concentrates. The findings contribute to improving zinc recovery while reducing energy consumption and environmental impact in non-ferrous metallurgy.
