Importance of self-study in English language teaching in higher education
Аннотация
Self-study has become an increasingly significant component of English language learning in higher education. Universities expect students to develop autonomy and independent learning skills that extend beyond classroom instruction. This article examines the importance of self-study in English language teaching (ELT) in higher education, focusing on how independent learning contributes to language proficiency, learner autonomy, and long-term academic success. Using a qualitative review of existing pedagogical literature and observations from higher education contexts, the study analyzes the role of self-study strategies, digital resources, and teacher guidance in supporting autonomous learning. The findings suggest that structured self-study improves vocabulary acquisition, reading comprehension, and communicative competence while fostering learner responsibility. However, effective implementation requires institutional support, appropriate learning materials, and guidance from instructors. The study concludes that integrating self-study into English language curricula enhances students’ academic performance and prepares them for lifelong learning
