Аннотация

This article explores how The Great Gatsby can be used as a resource in university EFL (English as a Foreign Language) classrooms to promote active language skills. Traditionally, literature is taught for reading and analysis rather than for communication, leaving a gap in students' speaking and writing practice. We propose a task-based framework that uses the novel's characters, settings, and multimedia (film) to create interactive activities. For example, students might role-play Gatsby and Daisy, compare the novel with the movie, or write descriptive passages about Gatsby's lifestyle. Such tasks integrate all language skills: reading the text, then speaking and writing about its content. Drawing on research, we show that this approach can increase student engagement and fluency. The findings suggest that when teachers scaffold The Great Gatsby with well-designed tasks, the novel becomes a tool for active learning rather than passive reading.
