The Problem of Cultural and Functional Equivalence in Literary Translation (The translation of Bhisham Sahni’s short story “सग मट”

This article examines the issues of ensuring cultural and functional equivalence in literary translation through an analysis of the short story “Saag-Meat” (साग मीट) by the Indian writer Bhisham Sahni. The translation of the title of the work into Uzbek as “Suhbat” is analyzed from a functional-stylistic point of view, and the degree of preservation of socio-philosophical symbols in the original is studied. As a result of the study, the role of transliteration and linguocultural interpretation in ensuring adequacy in the translation of nationally specific words and “speaking names” is substantiated.
