Аннотация

This study investigated the relationship between mucociliary transport function of the nasal mucosa and calcium metabolism in patients with chronic rhinosinusitis associated with cerebral palsy. The movement of cilia of ciliated epithelial cells responsible for mucociliary clearance was evaluated in relation to serum calcium concentration and vitamin D status. A total of 158 children aged 3–16 years with chronic rhinosinusitis participated in the investigation. The main group included 98 patients with cerebral palsy and chronic rhinosinusitis, while the comparison group consisted of 60 children with chronic rhinosinusitis without neurological disorders. Serum calcium and 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D3] concentrations were determined together with assessment of functional activity of the nasal mucosa. The obtained findings demonstrated that patients of the main group had significantly lower levels of 25(OH)D3 and serum calcium (approximately 1.8±0.14 mmol/L), which was associated with impairment of mucociliary transport function and prolongation of mucociliary clearance time (approximately 30.9±3.65 minutes). Correlation analysis demonstrated a direct positive relationship between serum calcium concentration, vitamin D levels, and mucociliary transport function of the nasal mucosa, with moderate correlation strength.
