Аннотация

Highly mineralized and fertilizer-and pesticide-polluted return water flows from irrigated fields along the upper course of the Amu Dar'ya in Soviet Central Asia may be contributing to serious health problems for downstream users who depend on the waters of the Amu Dar'ya for drinking and other purposes. This paper suggests a relationship between upstream increases in fertilizer and pesticide application as a result of irrigated land expansion and health consequences for downstream users along the lower Amu Dar'ya basin in western Uzbekistan.
