Characterization of Polymer Blends with FTIR Spectroscopy
Аннотация
Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) is used extensively for the characterization of quantitative analysis of polymer blends, the identification of their compatibility via intermolecular hydrogen bonding, and also to investigate their degradation processes. FTIR spectroscopy has been applied for blend studies because the physical properties of polymer blends are affected by the structures of the molecular chains. Depending on the nature of the blending, different polymer blends are able to exhibit different types of interactions and configurations, which can help in predicting their mechanical and physical properties. This review highlights the potential of the FTIR technique as a powerful tool for determining the properties of polymers blends both quantitatively and qualitatively. Infrared microspectroscopy has also been developed to enable the microspectroscopic examination of polymer blends and to relate this to the physical characteristics of materials and their fabricated products. Some polymeric blend systems that have been intensively investigated to explore their compatibility, photo-oxidation and microstructures using FTIR are also discussed. These data will enable the reader to design and tailor synergistic blends by selecting the appropriate monomeric composition that can exhibit desired physical and mechanical properties for the development of new classes of smart and cost-effective materials.
