Аннотация
The verdet constants of Nd3+ and Er3+ in ethyl sulphate and garnet lattices have been measured at low temperatures. The major contribution to the Faraday rotation in these materials arises from the transition of a 4f electron to the 5d shell. The energy of the transition, the associated oscillator strength and radial integral have been determined semi-empirically in terms of an 'effective' transition.
