First observation of excited states in the very neutron deficient nucleus<mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mml:mrow><mml:msubsup><mml:mrow/><mml:mrow><mml:mn>76</mml:mn></mml:mrow><mml:mrow><mml:mn>165</mml:mn></mml:mrow></mml:msubsup></mml:mrow><mml:mi mathvariant="normal">Os</mml:mi></mml:math>and the yrast structure of<mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mml:mrow><mml:msubsup><mml:mrow/><mml:mrow><mml:mn>76</mml:mn></mml:mrow><mml:mrow><mml:mn>166</mml:mn></mml:mrow></mml:msubsup></mml:mrow><mml:mi mathvariant="normal">Os</mml:mi></mml:math>

The yrast states in the neutron deficient $N=90$ nucleus ${}^{166}\mathrm{Os}$ have been extended to $J\ensuremath{\approx}12\ensuremath{\Elzxh}$ (possibly $14\ensuremath{\Elzxh})$ and two sidebands have been established. Transitions in ${}^{165}\mathrm{Os}$ have been observed for the first time. These nuclei were populated using the ${}^{106}\mathrm{Cd}{(}^{64}\mathrm{Zn}{,2pxn)}^{168\ensuremath{-}x}\mathrm{Os}$ reaction at a beam energy of 334 MeV. The emitted $\ensuremath{\gamma}$ rays were detected with the Jurosphere $\ensuremath{\gamma}$-ray spectrometer, while the recoiling nuclei were identified using an active stopper at the focal plane of the gas-filled separator RITU by recoil decay tagging. The observed states are discussed in terms of the systematics of the osmium nuclei in the transitional region as the $N=82$ shell closure is approached.
