Hot electron Shubnikov-de Haas effect in n-InSb

Experiments are presented which show the influence of electric fields of the order of 100 mV cm-1 on the Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations in n-InSb at liquid helium temperatures. The experimental results in the longitudinal magnetic field configuration are interpreted in terms of an electron temperature model. From the increase of the electron temperature with electric field in samples having three different carrier concentrations, data on the energy loss rate are obtained and compared with rates calculated for deformation potential scattering and piezoelectric scattering. A deformation potential constant of 6.9+or-1 eV is adequate to describe the observed energy loss rates for samples whose carrier concentrations differ by more than one order of magnitude.
