Abstract The absorption spectra in the free‐exciton region were measured on micrometer‐thick samples of bulk CdTe crystals. Analysis of the Urbach tail showed that the absorption edge is dominated by the free‐exciton transitions even at room temperature. The temperature dependence of the fundamental energy gap was obtained from the free‐exciton resonance from 4 K to 500 K. The value of 1.526 eV is proposed for the energy gap at 300 K. A comparison with the temperature dependencies of other works is given. (© 2006 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)
