Die Ontwikkeling van 'n Snoeibeleid vir die Vinnig Groeiende Eucalyptus-soorte in Staatsplantasies / The Development of a Pruning Policy for the Fast Growing Eucalypt Species in State Forests
SUMMARY The South African hardwood industry which is almost totally based on timber from eucalypt plantations, was initiated 102 years ago when a small eucalypt plantation was established near Worcester in the Cape Province. Today the Department of Forestry alone has reserved more than 14 000 ha for the production of hardwood sawlogs. In order to supply the sawmilling industry with high quality. defect free. sawlogs it was found necessary to prune the trees in state-owned eucalypt stands. The historical background and the principles considered in developing a suitable pruning policy are discussed.
