ABSTRACT Fertilizers offer a means of increasing timber production when the availability of land suitable for afforestation in South Africa is decreasing. Although there are many problems still to be solved before general recommendation can be made for the application of fertilizers to pines, extensive research indicates a general response to P or N x P. Research in eucalypts has been more successful and fertilizing at time of planting has been adopted as standard practice by many growers on a wide variety of sites. Eucalypts require P with high rates of N. N is not required on old wattle sites. Surface application within one month of planting has been the most successful.
