Ischemic Stroke: Histological Changes in Cardiac Nervous Cells

Ischemic stroke (IS) is a leading cause of mortality and long-term disability worldwide, with consequences extending beyond the central nervous system to peripheral organs such as the heart. Post-stroke cardiac complications, including arrhythmias, myocardial injury, and acute heart failure, are frequently observed and are attributed to neurogenic cardiac injury. This study investigates histological alterations in cardiac autonomic neurons in human patients who suffered ischemic stroke. Examination of post-mortem cardiac tissue revealed neuronal degeneration, cytoplasmic vacuolization, nuclear pyknosis, and apoptotic changes in intracardiac ganglia. These findings highlight the impact of ischemic stroke on cardiac autonomic structure and suggest potential mechanisms contributing to post-stroke cardiac dysfunction.
