Insect Damage to Timbers from the Indigenous Forests—Preliminary Results

SYNOPSIS Logs crosscut in the indigenous forests of the southern Cape were inspected for insect damage. The main timber species were Ocotea bullata, Podocarpus latifolius, P. falcatus, Rapanea melanophloeos, Olea capensis subsp. macrocarpa, Platylophus trifoliatus and the naturalised exotic Acacia melanoxylon. Some insects collected were identified as members of the families Scolytidae, Platypodidae, Cerambycidae and Buprestidae. The insects infestations were common but the severity of timber damage was low for the majority of tree species. The relative extent of bark and wood damage varied between species. Total damage varied significantly between depots. Insect damage, however, did not influence the price of the timber because of the low intensity of damage.
