The nature of magnetic dipole absorption observed in Sm2CuO4 is discussed. The absorption spectrum consists of two modes whose frequency for H‖ c4 depends linearly on the magnetic field, ν/γ = ν0±H, for the gap value ν0=12.5 cm−1. The absence of the temperature dependence of the gap near TN = 5.95 K makes it possible to identify this spectrum with interdoublet transitions in the Sm ion within the ground energy level 6H5/2 split by the intracrystalline field and not with the antiferromagnetic resonance in the Sm subsystem.
