Compton Scattering from the Deuteron and Extracted Neutron Polarizabilities
Аннотация
Differential cross sections for Compton scattering from the deuteron were measured at MAX-Lab for incident photon energies of 55 and 66 MeV at nominal laboratory angles of $45\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{}$, $125\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{}$, and $135\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{}$. Tagged photons were scattered from liquid deuterium and detected in three NaI spectrometers. By comparing the data with theoretical calculations in the framework of a one-boson-exchange potential model, the sum and the difference of the isospin-averaged nucleon polarizabilities, ${\ensuremath{\alpha}}_{N}+{\ensuremath{\beta}}_{N}=17.4\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}3.7$ and ${\ensuremath{\alpha}}_{N}\ensuremath{-}{\ensuremath{\beta}}_{N}=6.4\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}2.4$ (in units of ${10}^{\ensuremath{-}4}\text{ }{\mathrm{f}\mathrm{m}}^{3}$), have been determined. By combining the latter with the global-averaged value for ${\ensuremath{\alpha}}_{p}\ensuremath{-}{\ensuremath{\beta}}_{p}$ and using the predictions of the Baldin sum rule for the sum of the nucleon polarizabilities, we have obtained values for the neutron electric and magnetic polarizabilities of ${\ensuremath{\alpha}}_{n}=8.8\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}2.4(\mathrm{t}\mathrm{o}\mathrm{t}\mathrm{a}\mathrm{l})\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}3.0(\mathrm{m}\mathrm{o}\mathrm{d}\mathrm{e}\mathrm{l})$ and ${\ensuremath{\beta}}_{n}=6.5\ensuremath{\mp}2.4(\mathrm{t}\mathrm{o}\mathrm{t}\mathrm{a}\mathrm{l})\ensuremath{\mp}3.0(\mathrm{m}\mathrm{o}\mathrm{d}\mathrm{e}\mathrm{l})$, respectively.
