To evaluate the rate of hypothyroidism after 1 year in patients treated with a fixed dose of 131I
Аннотация
Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate the rate of hypothyroidism in 134 patients at 1 year after treatment with single fixed therapeutic dose of 600 MBq of 131I. Method: We performed a retrospective analysis of data from 134 patients (29 male, 105 female and median age 54 years) treated for hyperthyroidism between 1999 and Dec 2002. At presentation 71 patients (53%) had Graves’ disease (GD), 51 (38%) multinodular goitre (MNG) and 12 (9%) had functioning nodules (FN), documented by clinical biochemical and scintigraphic evidence of thyrotoxicosis. Patients were given a fixed therapeutic dose of 131I (600 MBq). Thyroid status was monitored regularly until hypothyroidism occurred or until TFTs became stable for over 1 year. Results: The incidence of hypothyroidism was determined at 1 year after the administration of radioiodine therapy. Seventy-three patients (55%) became hypothyroid, 54 (40%) became euthyroid and 7 (5%) remained thyrotoxic requiring further 131I therapy. Conclusion: A single 600 MBq dose of 131I effectively cures hyperthyroidism in 95% of patients at 1 year.
