2008 Yılı Tralleis Kazısı Koroplastik Buluntuları

In this study, a group of figurines recovered in the Tralleis excavations are discussed. The ruins of Tralleis located in antiquity on the borders of the region of Caria are in Efeler township, in the Province of Aydın. In recent excavations, detailed in­for­mation was obtained concerning the Western Necropolis and Bath-Gymnasium complex of the city. In this study three funeral figurines and six other figurines are evaluated. The clay of the figurines produ­ced by the molding technique and as semi-moulding was homogenous, containing mica and sand. The produc­tion characteristics and technical details of these figurines show they were produced in the Roman Im­perial Period. It was determined the figurines numbe­red TK. 1-3 were of the type termed funeral figurines. Funeral figurines were produced in Western Anatolia from the Hellenistic Period onwards which is why the role of these figurines in the region’s coroplastic produc­tion and the development of the type were investigated. The figurines numbered TK. 1-3 carry the style characteristics of the 1st A.D. in their technical detail and forms. The other group discussed in this study consituted: grotesque, Herakles, portrait-bust and ani­mal figurines, numbered TK. 4-9. The classification of these was carried out after defining the evaluated works. The examples defined in detail were subsequ­ently examined to determine their ico­nography. Da­ting was carried out through compa­ring the typologies of these examples with finds from contemporary cities and contexts. Stylistic and typo­logical examination show these Tralleis finds carry the style of the Roman Imperial Period. These types are found more frequ­ently in examples from the Carian region within the coroplastic practice of the Roman Imperial Period.
