Hypercoagulation as the main cause of death in COPD

<b>Purpose:</b> Analyze the main causes of death for patients with COPD. <b>Material and Methods:</b> A retrospective analysis of the autopsy protocols of 104 patients with COPD and their case histories was performed. <b>Results:</b> Results showed, that 63,5% of patients with COPD were comorbid pathology circulatory system diseases, while digestive system diseases are 1,9%. When analyzing the main cause of death, 93.3% stated diagnoses reflecting hypercoagulable states: 77.3% (75 cases out of 104) acute myocardial infarction and 22.7% (45 cases out of 104) ischemic type stroke. As a result, the authors concluded that diseases of the circulatory system of thrombogenic etiology are the main cause of death in patients with COPD. <b>Conclusion:</b> In the literature there are many data on the main causes of death for patients with COPD, such as respiratory failure, lung cancer, pulmonary thromboembolism, but due to the high comorbidity of COPD with cardiovascular pathology, and the mechanism of mutual complications of these nosologies, according to our research, today the main causes of death for patients with COPD are cardiovascular accidents caused by hypercoagulation.
