RISK OF DACRYOCYSTITIS IN NEWBORNS AND TREATMENT OUTCOMES

The results of clinical and anamnestic and special methods of examination of 61 newborns with dacryocystitis neonatorum (DN) are analyzed. The authors revealed that a complicated course of pregnancy, childbirth, birth trauma (pathology of the nasolacrimal channel: curvature or narrow passages), neonatal period, concomitant diseases and premorbid conditions can be predisposing factors of purulent inflammatory eye and other organ and system diseases in a newborn and a first year child. Dacryocystitis in newborns requires more attention to early detection by parents and timely diagnosis by neonatologists, pediatricians and other medical professionals. Lacrimal sac probing is the main and effective method of treatment to avoid more traumatic surgery in children of the first year of life.
