AI Authorship and Ownership of Intellectual Property in Industrial Power and Control Systems

Artificial intelligence (AI) systems are increasingly capable of autonomous generation of creative and inventive works that potentially warrant intellectual property (IP) protections. This paper analyzes the implications of granting AI systems legal authorship and ownership status over output like patents and copyrights. Benefits, including appropriately incentivizing AI innovation and allowing compensation for human contributors, are discussed. However, risks around over-concentration of AI rights, economic disruption, algorithmic bias, and human dignity also arise. Analysis proposes solutions encompassing IP policy reforms, transparency requirements, and oversight mechanisms to ensure responsible implementation. But significant legal ambiguities and coordination challenges remain regarding AI taking on creative roles comparable to humans. This paper aims to spur discourse on adapting IP frameworks and economic models to an AI future characterized by autonomous generation of inventions and works.
