THE ROLE OF LACUNAE IN EXPRESSING UZBEK CULTURE: IN THE WORKS OF CHOLPON

This article examines the role and significance of the lacuna phenomenon within the cultural-semantic system of the Uzbek language. Lacunas, as non-equivalent linguistic units, serve as carriers of national worldview, values, and cultural codes. Based on the analysis of English translations of Cholpon’s works, such as Night and Day, the semantic and cultural features of concepts like “or”, “andisha”, “ko‘ngil”, and “taqdir” are explored. Although certain cultural losses and semantic shifts are observed in translation, lacunas act as markers that preserve the uniqueness of Uzbek culture. The study proposes adaptation, explanatory translation, and compensation as effective strategies for representing lacunas in cross-cultural communication
