Labor Reallocation and Income Effects from Time Savings in Uzbek Agriculture
Аннотация
This paper explores how time savings in Uzbek agriculture shape the allocation of rural labor and the resulting effects on household income. The analysis combines household survey data with regional climate, production, and labor statistics to measure reductions in working hours linked to mechanization, improved irrigation, and higher-yield seed varieties. Evidence suggests that when agricultural tasks require less time, families do not simply reduce their workload; instead, labor is reallocated toward other productive uses. In some cases, this means expanding into higher-value crops or horticulture, while in others, household members pursue wage employment outside the farm sector. A smaller share of time is also directed toward education or domestic activities, underscoring the broader welfare dimensions. The empirical strategy employs regression models with farm, demographic, and regional controls, supported by instrumental variables to address endogeneity. Results indicate that time savings contribute to measurable income gains and support structural transformation in rural Uzbekistan.
