MASS MEDIA AS BRANCH OF GOVERNMENT. THE ROLE OF MASS MEDIA AT CONTEMPORARY TIME
Аннотация
This article examines the socio-political role of mass media in modern society, its relationship with state power, and its impact on democratic processes. It analyzes the historical foundations of why mass media has traditionally been called the "fourth estate." The article considers the functions of mass media as an independent watchdog, a shaper of public opinion, and a mediator facilitating citizen participation in state policy. In conclusion, the article emphasizes that while modern mass media must preserve its traditional functions of oversight and informing the public, it also needs to strengthen its role as a responsible, fact-based, and citizen-empowering force within the new information environment. Although not a formal component of the government system, mass media remains a crucial "fourth estate" in shaping and controlling political processes.
