Linguocultural characteristics and translation strategies of conceptual metaphors

Conceptual metaphors, as proposed by Lakoff and Johnson (1980), serve as fundamental cognitive mechanisms for understanding abstract concepts through concrete experiences, while being shaped by cultural contexts. This study examines the linguocultural characteristics of conceptual metaphors in English and Uzbek, highlighting both universal patterns and culture-specific variations. Drawing on examples from everyday language, proverbs, and idioms, the analysis reveals shared mappings (e.g., anger is heat/fire) alongside divergences rooted in cultural values – individualism and pragmatism in English versus collectivism, agrarian traditions, and kinship in Uzbek. Translation strategies are explored, including literal translation, cultural substitution, explication, and omission, to address challenges arising from non-equivalent conceptualizations. The findings underscore the need for culturally sensitive approaches in cross-linguistic metaphor transfer, contributing to cognitive linguistics and translation studies.
