The Influence of Slang on the Contemporary English Lexicon: A Sociolinguistic and Digital-Era Perspective
Аннотация
This study explores the structural, sociolinguistic, and technological influence of slang on the contemporary English lexicon. Moving beyond traditional interpretations of slang as informal or peripheral vocabulary, the paper argues that slang functions as a central mechanism of lexical innovation in the digital era. By integrating classical sociolinguistic theory with digital communication research, this study introduces four conceptual frameworks: Algorithmic Sociolinguistics, Compressed Lexical Evolution, the Cyclical Legitimization Model, and Platform-Driven Semantic Acceleration. The analysis demonstrates that slang reshapes semantic boundaries, redistributes lexical authority, and accelerates linguistic change through algorithmically mediated diffusion. The findings suggest that contemporary English lexical development cannot be fully understood without recognizing slang as a structural and evolutionary force.
