Speech Etiquette and Linguistic Manipulation: A Pragmatic Study of Politeness Strategies in Discourse
Аннотация
Speech etiquette represents a fundamental aspect of communicative behavior, as it governs interpersonal interaction through socially and culturally recognized norms of politeness. At the same time, language frequently serves as a means of influencing others, which gives rise to various forms of linguistic manipulation. This article explores the relationship between speech etiquette and manipulation from a pragmatic standpoint. The main objective of the study is to examine how etiquette formulas and politeness strategies function not only to maintain respectful communication but also to achieve persuasive effects. Relying on qualitative discourse analysis, the research investigates data drawn from everyday conversations, media discourse, and digital communication. The findings reveal that speech etiquette often coincides with manipulative strategies, particularly through indirect expression, mitigation, and positive politeness. The study argues that speech etiquette possesses a dual pragmatic function: it supports social harmony while simultaneously enabling subtle forms of linguistic influence. These results contribute to a broader understanding of pragmatic competence and discourse behavior in contemporary communication.
