Electronic Visual Dictionaries: Opportunities and Problems
Аннотация
Electronic visual dictionaries have become an important component of modern language education, applied linguistics and digital lexicography. Unlike traditional printed dictionaries, they combine verbal explanation with images, pronunciation, animation, examples, semantic links and interactive search tools. This makes them especially useful for vocabulary acquisition, foreign language learning, terminology instruction and the development of learners’ communicative competence. The article analyzes the pedagogical and linguistic opportunities of electronic visual dictionaries, as well as the problems connected with their design, reliability, accessibility and methodological use. The results show that electronic visual dictionaries support comprehension, memorization and independent learning, but their effectiveness depends on the quality of visual content, contextual accuracy, interface convenience, teacher guidance and learners’ digital literacy. The article concludes that electronic visual dictionaries should not be viewed only as digital copies of printed dictionaries, but as multimodal educational resources that require scientifically grounded content, didactic integration and continuous methodological evaluation.
