ENGLISH FOR OCCUPATIONAL PURPOSES: MATERIALS DEVELOPMENT PORTFOLIO FOR MEDIA AND COMMUNICATION STUDENTS

Аннотация

This study presents a materials development portfolio designed for first-year students of the Media and Communication Faculty at the Uzbek State World Languages University. The learners are upper-intermediate English users preparing for future careers in journalism and media communication. The portfolio focuses on adapting and supplementing textbook materials to improve students’ communicative competence, academic writing, listening comprehension, cultural awareness, and professional language skills. Authentic resources such as podcasts, articles, online collaborative tools, and discussion-based activities were integrated into the lessons to support learner-centered instruction. The study employed qualitative analysis of learner needs and instructional adaptation strategies based on communicative and task-based approaches. The findings demonstrate that authentic materials and integrated-skills activities increased student engagement, promoted critical thinking, strengthened vocabulary acquisition, and improved students’ ability to synthesize information from multiple media sources. The portfolio concludes that carefully adapted materials can effectively support the linguistic and professional development of journalism students in English for Occupational Purposes contexts.
