THE IMPORTANCE OF LISTENING SKILLS IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNING

Listening skills are widely recognized as one of the most essential components of language learning, particularly in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) contexts where learners have limited access to authentic spoken English. This article examines the importance of listening comprehension in developing overall English proficiency, including its impact on speaking, vocabulary acquisition, pronunciation, and communicative competence. The study is based on a qualitative literature review of key theoretical and empirical works in applied linguistics and language teaching methodology. The findings suggest that listening is not a passive skill but an active cognitive process involving interpretation, prediction, and meaning construction. Despite its importance, listening is often neglected in traditional classrooms due to exam-oriented teaching systems and lack of resources. The article argues that systematic integration of listening activities into English instruction significantly enhances learners’ communicative ability and overall language development.
