Floating Solar Farms Stabilize Power Supply in Flood-Prone Regions

The problem is even bigger in flood-prone regions, where it’s very common for the power supply to be disrupted frequently by natural disasters. Floods also have a profound impact on traditional forms of energy infrastructure, causing power outages as well as recovery periods that typically cover weeks. They are a huge problem for rural and remote people; they interfere with the economic stability and impede access to the most critical services. Climate change is resulting in both increased flood frequency and increased flood severity, thus, increased flood recovery and response are required, and this increased flood response must be dealt with through resilient, sustainable, and innovative energy solutions. In this paper, FSFs have been proposed as a constant power source for the flood-prone regions. This floating solar technology is superior in its features as it can fix solar panels on big water bodies like reservoirs and lakes, thus leaving the land for solar panel installation, and such places are safe from natural disasters, which can lead to loss of solar panels for land-based solar technology. A system of IoT sensors provides real-time monitoring of the environmental factors such as solar irradiance, water level, and weather conditions etc. Additionally, AI-based algorithms calculate panel tilt and microgrid energy production and storage at the same time and adapt to a flooding event to keep energy production steady. Besides providing power supply stabilization during flood events, the proposed solution promotes a paradigm of renewable energy that grows with other conditions of the environment. Floating solar farms can help communities that suffer floods to have a more resilient and sustainable energy infrastructure. By applying this method, traditional power grids are not needed, and this therefore leads to a carbon emissions-free, disaster-prone, country-friendly power solution. Therefore, floating solar farms constitute a sustainable, scalable, and flexible energy solution and can play a crucial role in the fight against climate change and the effects of global energy systems.
