Microinstabilities upstream of the Earth's bow shock: A brief review

This is a brief review of short wavelength fluctuations and their associated phenomena upstream of the earth's bow shock. Sources of free energy, the most likely instabilities, and the associated nonlinear consequences that may be observed are discussed.
