The GASP array

Abstract Since the discovery in 1986 (1) of the first discrete superdeformed (SD) band in 152Dy. a new dimension has been opened up for the study of nuclear properties which has stimulated the development of a new generation of detectors for γ-ray specrroscopy. After several years of intense experimental work, many intriguing questions are still unanswered about the mechanism of population and of decay of the SD bands, and about the interplay of superdeformation with the other internal degrees of freedom of the nuclear system.
