Framing essay: diverse economies methodology

All diverse economies research aims to make new worlds and ways of being possible. Yet diverse economies research includes a wide range of different kinds of projects encompassing a vast geographic area. This chapter considers the distinctive diverse economies methodology that is common to these different projects aiming to make new worlds possible. The author begins by laying out the diverse economies methodology in terms of ethics, transformation, a plurality of methods and place-based research. This methodology has several important implications which are then considered, focusing in particular on our knowledge of economy, the subjectivity of researchers and the kinds of economic intervention that are possible. The chapter concludes by noting some of the challenges likely to shape diverse economies methodology into the future.
