The orbital magnetic susceptibility has been determined for strictly two-dimensional motion of the conduction electrons in a layered structure; expressions have been derived for the major contributions to the susceptibility for certain types of perturbation in a parabolic spectrum due to Bragg planes. Results are presented from a numerical calculation on the effects of the chemical-potential level on the orbital and spin susceptibilities for the case where there is one plane, which show that there are sharp features at the critical points in the spectrum.
