The mechanism of bubble formation in liquid helium on the surface of plastically deformed crystals

Annotatsiya

The acoustic emission and dynamic change in the surface relief of a plastically deformed crystal as the result of the formation of slip bands are treated as the source of sound pulses in liquid helium surrounding the crystal. The average amplitude of the sound pressure (rarefaction) thus produced in the liquid exceeds the ultimate tensile strength of liquid helium, and, therefore, must result in the formation of cavitation bubbles in the sound field in the vicinity of slip bands. The proposed mechanism is considered as an alternative to the mechanism of helium boiling due to possible local heating of the crystal during plastic deformation.
