Thermodynamics of molecular librational motion in <i>β</i>-O2

We consider the effect of librational anharmonicity on thermodynamic properties of β-O2. It is shown that, unlike in crystals of the N2 type, the sign of the anharmonicity correction to the librational specific heat in β-O2 is negative, and in a rigid lattice the librational subsystem does not manifest instability with respect to transition to the orientationally disordered state. The nature of the transition to the γ-phase is discussed.
