Diffusion processes in the plastic deformation of solid argon

The creep of crystalline argon under uniaxial tension is investigated in the 0.9−0.6 Tm temperature range. It is shown that the plastic deformation of argon is due to a Weertman mechanism of dislocation climb. This is indicated by direct microscopic observations of the subgrain bound motion in argon during creep. The data obtained are compared with the results of investigations of the plasticity of solid hydrogen and helium.
