It has been discovered that the critical current Ic in thin (2ξ ≤ d < λ) vanadium films is independent of the temperature within a certain range of reduced temperatures and magnetic field intensities (magnetic field parallel to the film surface). A hypothesis is proposed for explaining this behavior of the critical current on the basis of concepts about transitions between a commensurate phase and an incommensurate one. The commensurability between the period of the vortex lattice in a film and the period of the vortex image lattice is also examined.
