Manifestation of the magnetoelectric interaction in the optical phonon spectrum of a ferroelectric magnetic medium

It is demonstrated that the observed anomalies in the spectrum of the optical phonons of the ferroelectric antiferromagnet BaCoF4 as it orders magnetically are the result of the magnetoelectric exchange interaction. A large effect of a similar nature is predicted in ferroelectric magnetic crystals with a noncentrosymmetric paraelectric phase.
